When Alix Dieuson talks about food, it’s not just about flavor, it’s about family, legacy, and community. Originally from Haiti, Alix came to Portland in 2016 upon studying abroad in Oregon. He had a dream to create something meaningful. What began as a longing for the familiar taste of home has grown into Tap Tap Cuisine, a restaurant rooted in culture, gratitude, and empowerment.
For Alix, the story starts in his mother’s kitchen. She was the family’s main cook, known for making her own spices and for turning every meal into a celebration of resilience. “My mom was the heart of everything,” Alix shared. “She taught me that food connects people. It feeds the body and the spirit.” Inspired by her strength, he dreamed of one day owning a restaurant that would honor her and the Haitian community.
After arriving in Portland, Alix quickly learned that starting a business in a new country came with challenges. This included limited resources to navigating new systems. That’s when he found Hacienda’s Empresarios program, which provides Latino and immigrant entrepreneurs with the tools, mentorship, and confidence to build and grow their own businesses. Through the support of Business Advisor, Juan Viladosa, Alix pursued his dream of owning a brick-and-mortar.
“The Empresarios program gave me the ABCs of small business,” Alix said. “It helped me understand the process, but also motivated me to see the bigger picture… to create something that could last.”
With that foundation, Tap Tap Cuisine continued to grow. First, as a food cart serving authentic Haitian, Caribbean, and South African-inspired meals. Alix quickly became known for his bold, traditional flavors and his welcoming spirit. But beyond food, he was building something deeper: a sense of belonging. “Tap Tap isn’t just a name,” he explained. “In Haiti, tap-taps are shared taxis that bring people together. That’s what I want Tap Tap Cuisine to represent. I want it to be about connection, culture, and community.”
As Tap Tap Cuisine continued to grow, Alix transitioned from a food cart to a full restaurant. This was a milestone that felt both exciting and humbling. “It was stressful at times,” he admitted. “But I wanted something more prestigious, something that showed our community what’s possible.”
Through his journey, Alix has become a strong advocate for community empowerment and generational wealth within immigrant families. His dream goes beyond business success; it’s about opening doors for others. “We’re creating opportunities, not just for ourselves, but for the next generation,” he said. “That’s how we build together.”
Today, Tap Tap Cuisine stands as more than a restaurant. It’s a cultural hub. It’s a space where food, art, and people come together. From local events to mentorship opportunities, Alix continues to give back to the community that supported his dream.
When asked what keeps him motivated, he smiled: “Gratitude. Every person who walks through our doors reminds me why this work matters… we’re feeding hope.” Alix aspires to continue to make sauces and spices, in hopes of going to Top Chef.
His story reflects the heart of the Empresarios program: empowering immigrant entrepreneurs to dream boldly, overcome barriers, and build futures rooted in culture and community. As an alum, Alix continues to share his story with new entrepreneurs.
