Adult Education
Overview
Plaza Comunitaria
Hacienda has partnered with Mexico's National Institute for Adult Education (INEA) and the Institute for Mexicans Abroad (IME) through the Mexican Consulate's office in Portland to provide an adult education curriculum and support for Mexican and Latino youth and adults, 15 years old or older, at two community sites in Portland and one site in Molalla at Hacienda’s farmworker housing.
Education classes are held in “Plazas Comunitarias,” which are physical spaces that integrate educational resources and educational actions for lifelong learning and work skills. Learning is accomplished through tutors, printed curriculum, web-based portals and videos. Students are able to gain Spanish literacy skills, complete their primary and secondary education certificates, learn English, prepare for GED, and improve computer literacy skills.
The long-term outcomes of these Plazas Comunitarias are for Hacienda's residents to
- gain knowledge and skills to improve their employment status;
- develop Spanish literacy to learn English easier;
- support their children's education by example; and
- improve self-esteem through increased pride in their culture and place of origin.
