Volunteer Opportunities

The volunteers who have been continuously involved with Hacienda have made our work that much more meaningful. We are grateful to all of those who have become part of our community with their work in activities ranging from homework assistance and youth empowerment, to neighborhood cleanups and event planning.

Bilingual Garden Intern at Hacienda CDC

This is a 7-10 hr. a week volunteer position with Hacienda Community Development Corporation.
Starts March 2012-October 2012
Intern will report to the Youth and Family Services Department and work directly with Hacienda’s After School Program, and Parent Involvement Staff.
 

Position Description:

  • Engage Hacienda resident families in the maintenance of the existing garden sites at Los Jardines de La Paz and Salon Comunal, both located on Hacienda’s properties in the Cully neighborhood.
  • Develop a cohesive strategy around garden use that includes “renting” beds, volunteer beds and youth program beds
  • Create a contract for families “renting” garden beds and do outreach to families to rent the plots
  • Oversee the planning, planting, maintenance and irrigation of the two sites
  • Work with After School Program youth 1 x week to do garden education activities
  • Utilize culturally specific gardening techniques/plant varieties in the garden
  • Maintain a working compost bin on site
  • Evaluate and maintain soil fertility
  • Help find donations of seeds, plant starts and amendments for the gardens

Must be:

  • Bilingual English/Spanish
  • Have experience working in diverse communities and working with youth
  • Knowledgeable about organic gardening, composting, cover crops, crop rotation etc.
  • Have over 2 years of gardening/farming experience in the Pacific NW
  • Self-directed
  • Comfortable working with others
  • Be able to pass a criminal background check

Work with youth! After-school tutoring/mentoring

Assist youth, ages 5-12, with homework and foster positive, supportive relationships in our Expresiones and Vamos Kids Club after-school programs.  Occasional opportunities for a 1-on-1 tutoring relationship.  We especially need volunteers to help with math and reading.  You do not have to be bilingual, but experience with English language learners is always welcome.

Date: On-going throughout the academic school year.

Time: Weekdays, 3pm-4:15pm, 4:30pm-6:30pm, or both! A 10-week minimum commitment is requested.

Location: At our community center sites along NE Killingsworth Street.

Reading, Writing & Arithmetic (Tutoring Adults)

Assist adults, ages 15 & up, to earn their primary and secondary education certifications in Spanish. Spanish fluency required. Middle School and High School level math proficiency desired.

Date: On-going throughout the year.

Time: Mon, Wed, Thu 10am-2pm (NE Portland location); Tue 10am-2pm (N Portland location) & Friday 6pm-8pm (Molalla location).

Volunteer Business Coach/Mentor

Our growing microenterprise program is seeking experienced business professionals to mentor aspiring entrepreneurs as they begin the process of starting their a business.  You would provide advice and support to the entrepreneur as he/she develops a business plan, help him/her practice their English, and encourage goal setting and attainment.

Date: Ongoing

Time: At least 1 hour per month (1 meeting with entrepreneur)

Location: Flexible
