Hacienda Receives National Award - 5/19/2009
Plaza Los Robles received first place honors in the category of Rural Development at the National Development Council 2009 Awards competition in Washington, D.C. on May 15.
NDC is the number one supplier of financing, development expertise and development assistance for community revitalization efforts throughout the nation, working in partnership with local and state governments and non-profit organizations in all 50 states and Puerto Rico to help build communities and economies, and ultimately, improve people’s lives.
NDC's Project Showcase honors community development organizations serving NDC's mission of enhancing the lives of low and moderate-income people living in underserved communities in innovative, creative and effective ways. Plaza Los Robles, Hacienda's grassroots farmworker housing development in Molalla, Oregon, stole the show at NDC's national competition in Washington D.C. May 11-14, and was voted first place for Rural Developments.
Plaza Los Robles provides dignified affordable rental housing, a place to learn, play and grow in a supportive environment for farmworkers and their families on a continuous basis and near their places of employment. Plaza Los Robles is unique among rural developments in that it offers on-site access to culturally-specific supportive services for families. Residents at Plaza Los Robles, like all of Hacienda’s affordable housing communities, enjoy the full support of a vast array of culturally appropriate services supported by bilingual/bicultural staff. Programs include inter-generational education for children and adults, healthy lifestyle awareness classes and civic engagement opportunities.
As a result of Plaza Los Robles, 23 low-income farmworker families, including more than 40 youth, have a reliable place to call home. Los Robles is more than affordable housing; it is a vibrant community that supports each other and where adults and youth alike can strive for their dreams.
