Growing Gardens at Los Jardines - 11/25/2008

On Saturday November 22nd, Hacienda residents gathered with over thirty community volunteers to kicked-off a three-year resident gardening program. The community prepared twenty garden beds with a mixture of organic compounds, compost, and hay to enrichen the soil for spring planting.

Growing Gardens, a Portland non-profit dedicated to bringing organic gardening to low-income populations, is providing residents of Los Jardines de La Paz with gardening tools, seeds, plant starts, training, and garden mentors over the next three years, with the long-term goal of handing oversight of the garden plots to the residents.

Beginning in March 2009, families will plant their first crops and enjoy the fresh produce throughout the summer. Eventually the gardens will provide an affordable and accessible year-round supply of nutritious foods to the community. Hacienda's after-school programs will also be intimitely involved in the entire process, participating in gardening workshops and planting and harvesting crops.
