The volunteers who have been continuously involved with Hacienda have made our work that much more meaningful. Current Positions Available:
Position: After-School Program Volunteer
Department/Program: Community Building
Reports To: Community Building Programs Manager
Advisor: Deputy Director
Hours: Afternoons: 3pm-4:15pm or 4:30pm-6:30pm
Job Location: 3 possible sites at community centers along NE Killingsworth Street, Portland, OR
Purpose: After-school Program volunteers assist Program Coordinators to tutor, mentor and support both elementary-school and middle-school youth living in Hacienda’s affordable housing complexes in NE Portland. These programs strive to improve academic success of youth, create greater connections between youth and their schools and communities, and create a supportive environment that encourages youth to envision their future.
Benefits of the position: Volunteers receive a great opportunity to work with diverse groups of youth. This program also provides opportunities to development supportive mentor relationships with youth living in an at-risk neighborhood, as well as assist youth in setting goals, connecting to community and succeeding in school.
Major duties: Work one-on-one with youth to assist in homework assignments. Accompany youth on field-trips and civic-engagement activities.
Qualifications and Skills:
Experience working with underserved communities
Experience working with youth
Knowledge of elementary and middle school level subjects, such as math and computers
Excellent interpersonal and oral communications skills
Ability to pass a criminal background check
Spanish and Somali language skills are welcome
Term: A commitment of at least 2 hours per week for 10 weeks is required.
Time Involved: After-school programs operate daily following the Portland Public School calendar.
The Vamos elementary-school program operates from 3:00pm – 4:15pm.
The Expresiones middle-school program operates from 4:30pm – 6:30pm.
Application Procedures: Interested volunteers should submit a cover letter addressing their qualifications for the position and why they are interested in volunteering with Hacienda. Please also enclose a Volunteer Application form, which can be downloaded from our website. Accepted applicants will be asked to pay Hacienda $15 to cover the cost of a criminal background check.
